This month’s What’s Hot is almost the mirror image of last month’s, with Japan and Japanese Smaller Companies on the rise, along with commodities.  Long dated bonds fell after a strong rally in August.

What’s Hot?

  • Japanese funds make up 50% of the top performers in September…
  • …with Japanese Smaller Companies at numbers 2 and 3 in the table.
  • This was driven by buying from within Japan.
  • Gold and natural resources make up the rest of the table, continuing their strong run this year.
  • This was triggered by Chinese growth holding up (along with Asia as a whole).
  • Biotech sneaks in at the bottom.  Its large US exposure makes this fund more geared towards the ebbs and flows of the US Presidential election.

What’s Not?

  • UK long dated bonds make up 9/10 funds.
  • After a good August funds holding bonds with a long time until they mature have fallen back in September.
  • One UK growth fund makes it into the table.  Uncertainty is still a factor in the UK stock market.
  • This was due to fears about higher interest rates and higher inflation, particularly if helicopter money is coming.
