What's Hot What's Not

hot notIt feels as if normal service has resumed, with India and China, plus Asia and emerging markets generally, reclaiming the Top 10 which they have dominated for much of this year.  Gold, energy, biotech and infrastructure feature at the bottom.

What’s Hot:  Asia re-emerges

  • Within Asia and this table, China dominated, and has done throughout 2017…
  • …year to date most funds returns range from 25-45%
  • India has had a quiet year by comparison, the Jupiter fund up “only” 19%...
  • …but the bounce this month was not unnoticed by us, and we now look for a break upwards
  • It is puzzling that Korea should appear, but the markets are always full of such conundrums…
  • …don’t lose your focus trying to figure what is going on!

What’s Not:  The stutterers and non-starters

  • Gold funds sprung into life early in the year, but have been stuttering since, and this was another poor month
  • Lots of non-starters from two Virgin funds to infrastructure and Majedie - who is taking the Tortoise label to heart
  • Gold will have its day again, once we see sentiment rock solid negative – there are still too many optimists for our liking
  • Biotech is one to think about buying when the US market as a whole falls sharply
